The Great Canticles as Cantatas
BWV 82, Ich habe genug (“It is enough”), J.S. Bach’s setting of the Song of Simeon, will be presented as part of the 10 AM service on Sunday, February 2nd, 2025, continuing our musical exploration of Bach’s settings of the great canticles of the Incarnation. The two major arias from the cantata will be presented respectively as the Opening Voluntary and during Communion so be sure to come about 10 minutes early to hear this wonderful music.
This is the appointed text about Simeon who upon seeing Jesus being bought to the Temple realized that in seeing the savior said (paraphrased):
I have enough;
I have taken the savior, the hope of the pious,
Into my eager arms;
I have beheld him;
My faith has pressed Jesus to my heart;
Now I wish, with joy, this very day
To depart from here:
I have enough.
It is one of Bach’s most beautiful cantatas and is based on Simeon’s Canticle the “Nunc dimittis.”
