Backpack Buddies Program
A surprising number of children in our community go hungry each week. The Backpack Buddies Program provides many of these children with weekend meals and snacks during the school year. At the end of each week, children go home with a backpack containing six balanced meals and two healthy snacks. St. Anne’s parishioners join with other local churches and volunteers to bring this program to Annapolis Elementary School (AES). AES serves many students who rely on the school cafeteria to feed them breakfast and lunch every day and who have very little food once they leave school. The school identified 47 students (30 families) most at risk for weekend hunger and who now, through the Backpack Buddies program, go home with food every weekend.
There are several ways to get involved in this all-volunteer program. You can spend an hour, once a week, packing backpacks for the kids. You can sponsor a child for $350 for a year, contributions are tax-deductible, or for any amount you’d like. Finally, you can be matched with a child (anonymously) and send that child notes and other small encouragements throughout the year so they know someone cares about them.
