Naomi’s Village Update

Sponsorship Sunday: April 21st after the 10am service

Church partners with Naomi’s Village in Kenya, St. Anne’s is hosting our annual Child Sponsorship Sunday on April 21st after the 10am service. Join us at Church Circle to welcome the Macnamara family from Naomi’s Village and learn more about the need for and impact of sponsoring a beautiful Kenyan child.  Including Hellen and Antony who have support through a St. Anne’s outreach grant, 42 students receive support from dozens of St. Anne’s parishioners. Child sponsors from St. Anne’s will be on hand to share their experiences, answer questions, and show you how simple it is to select a child to sponsor.

For information about our upcoming mission trip in July 2024, child sponsorship, and involvement in our Naomi’s Village ministry at St. Anne’s, contact lorimarchant2011@gmail.com.

Naomi’s Village Kenya

Naomi’s Village is a children’s home, pre-school, and K-12 academy in Maai Mahiu, Kenya, raising the next generation of Kenyan leaders. It is located in the Great Rift Valley about 1.5 hours northwest of Nairobi. The families served typically live on an average of less than $2 per day, suffer from generational poverty, and have no access to a quality education for their children.

More information is provided below or for a more comprehensive look at their ministry, visit the Naomi’s Village website.

St. Anne's Partnership

St. Anne’s relationship with Naomi’s Village Kenya began in January 2019 after founders and CEOs’ Bob and Julie Mendonsa visited St. Anne’s and shared their inspiring story of their response to God’s call to Kenya. In response, many St. Anne’s members and others in Annapolis felt compelled to take action to sponsor over 50 children at Naomi’s Village and raise awareness in our community. Currently, more than 25 people are engaged with this vibrant ministry as child sponsors, one-time donors, missioners who have volunteered at Naomi’s Village, or in other awareness-building and supportive activities at St. Anne’s and within the Annapolis community.

Allison Fassinger, Naomi’s Village talks about what St. Anne’s support means to Hellen and Antony.

September 2023 Grant Report - St. Anne’s Parish, Thank you for your faithful support of Hellen Wangui and Antony Njoroge. Your gift and prayers continue to improve Hellen Wangui’s and Antony Njoroge’s quality of life. Through the ministry of Naomi’s Village, they receive holistic care, quality education, and family empowerment, all with the aim to help these two, and many others, break out of the cruel cycle of poverty in which they were born.

Hellen Wangui - 11 years old.

Hellen is in the 4th grade at Cornerstone Preparatory Academy. Her teacher describes Hellen as an active listener who is always ready to learn. Hellen is at the top of her Kiswahili and Social Studies class, scoring high A’s in both. In all other subjects, she scores a B or higher. Hellen loves reading and says the school library is her favorite place on campus. Hellen is curious and proud to learn new concepts she can share with her siblings and parents. Hellen’s teacher says she has beautiful handwriting, likes to draw, and leads the other students in keeping the classroom organized and tidy. Hellen’s favorite day at Cornerstone is Saturday when she gets to participate in clubs and sports and enjoys playing with her friends Lucy, Alexandra, and Esther.

Hellen is a part of a loving family consisting of both parents and four other siblings. Hellen and her younger sister Lucy attend Cornerstone Preparatory Academy. Hellen's parents express deep gratitude for the support they receive from the ministry. They acknowledge that the education and coordinated services provided to Hellen goes beyond their financial capabilities.

On a recent home visit conducted by our school social worker and nurse, the parents expressed that great hope has filled their family knowing Hellen is on her way to a better future. This has given them a profound sense of purpose to provide a stable home for Hellen. They are deeply rooted in the Christian faith and appreciate the way Cornerstone shares the love of Christ with Hellen through chapels and daily devotions. Hellen’s mother noted the level of responsibility that has grown in Hellen as she eagerly helps with home chores and is self-motivated when it comes to her schoolwork and completing all assignments on time.

Hellen’s mother and father expressed deep gratitude for the assistance provided through the Naomi’s Village ministry, recognizing the significant impact it is making on their whole family.

Antony Njoroge – 8 years old

Antony is in the second grade at Cornerstone Preparatory Academy. His teacher describes him as a focused student who has shown remarkable improvement over the course of this school year. Antony was “meeting expectations” in all subjects at the beginning of the school year. His teacher was very proud to share that on recent exams, Antony is now “exceeding expectations” in all subjects.

Antony’s reading skills have improved significantly since the start of the school year, which has led to increased self-confidence. Antony enjoys reading new stories himself as well as when others read to him and his class. His teacher said he excels in math, is a kind friend to his classmates, and has a funny sense of humor. When not in the classroom, Antony can be found playing soccer with his friends. His favorite position on the team is defender.

Antony lives with his single mother and four other siblings. Due to domestic violence, Antony, his mother, and siblings had to flee their home a little over a year ago. Antony’s mother, Agosta, makes it a priority to provide safety and stability in their new home. She works on the Cornerstone farm, as well as doing laundry for other families. Because of the food packages provided by Cornerstone, as well as the 12 meals per week that Antony eats at school, she has been able to use her resources to connect their home to electricity. Antony’s mother noted how Antony has calmed knowing he is in a safe home with lights at night. Antony’s mother said she did not know how she and her children would have survived this past year without the support of Naomi’s Village and Cornerstone. Everything from safe transportation for her children, to healthcare provided at school, to social workers checking in on her regularly, filled her with strength to start a new life with her children where they were not at risk of abuse and violence in their home.

Your sponsorships of Hellen Wangui and Antony Njoroge are transforming the way they view their future selves. Because of their restored dignity, not only are Hellen and Antony flourishing, but their families are as well. Your prayers, love, and support are making a lasting impact that will positively affect their families for generations to come.

Thank you for partnering with us.
